Greasemonkey: Yahoo! Finance Currency Converter

After the converter I developed ages ago for Dashboard, I needed something to help me grasp quickly the prices in foreign currencies displayed on the web site I visited.

I therefore started to develop my first greasemonkey script to have Firefox do that automatically.

It is not the first one around, I particularly like that one, but for the exercise, I wanted to develop mine using Yahoo! Finance exchange rates.

1Installation

Get Firefox
Install GreaseMonkey
restart Firefox

3Configuration

When you first load a page after the installation, the script will prompt you what currency you want to convert to. You can enter one of these.

If you wish to change it later, you can by going to the menu item:

tools -> user script commands -> Change currency conversion

4Styling

You can personalise easily the style of the conversion value by adding in you file chrome/userContent.css (in your firefox profile directory) a css declaration with selector a.GM_CurrencyConvertion.

For example:

5Updates

Since v0.2, the script supports the auto-update script for greasemonkey. If you have installed it, then the update will be made automatically when a new version is availlable.

I added support for a lot more unicode symbols. However, many of the symbols are linked to multiple currencies [1]. I randomly selected one for each symbol, if you want to change that, go open the .js file and comment/uncomment the line that interest you in the currency list.

Would be nice if the currency was displayed with thousand seperators, e.g. 1,000,000 and not 1000000. Product is fantastic.

Is there a currency feed done by Yahoo back end programmer?

I wanna make an online yahoo converter mashup, but havent decided which programming conbination to choose. do you have any suggestions?

  Have a look in the code, itâ€™s not too hard to understand. L224 is the URL building to get the conversion rate. For example :
  
  http://finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=EURUSD=X&f=l1
  
  will give you the rate for Euros to US Dollars.
  
  this will return you a csv file with only one value in it.
  
  For what I know, the url format was not public when I developed the script and I just played a bit with the parameters to find the right combination. You can probably try to get more data from it.
  
  I donâ€™t know what Yahoo Finance policy is about using this data on another site. You might want to contact them for that.

Hi

"kr" is automatically deciphered as DKK (danish kroner) while I’m using norwegian kroner (NOK). Is it possible to select which kr to convert from?

Shame prices given in NOK kr is wrongly translated from danish kroner. Example: 1000kr results in: 1000kr(1087.8NOK) (link below)

Guess there is the same problem for swedish kroner (SEK)

  Ok, that’s a limitation of the script, it can map a symbol to only one currency. For example $ will always be mapped to US dollars, not Canadian dollars, etc... It’s the same case with the Krone, the Colon, the Rupee and the Peso.
  
  I had to make "random" choice to which currency the symbol will be mapped to. "kr" is mapped to DKK, you can change that if you edit the script (go to the greasemonkey manage script dialogue, select this script and choose edit). Go to line 61, this will look like: "\u006b\u0072":"DKK", replace this line by: "\u006b\u0072":"NOK",
  
  this way, every "kr" symbol will be mapped to NOK. I don’t really have a better solution yet
  
  I don’t understand your problem about the value conversion? However, remember that I am not responsible of Yahoo conversion rates, I just use their service and have no control over the rates they provide.

Hey,

Ik really like the script. There is one thing though. If the , is used as decimal separator, amounts get multiplied by 1000. I fixed this by first checking in the amount if the , occurs once in the amount and if followed by at most two digits. If it is, then all ’.’ are removed and the ’,’ is replaced by a ’.’

I have a diff to the original with my modifications. Hope it helps. Cheers,

  Cool, I wanted to do that since ages (2 years that the script has this bugand was always too lazy
  
  I tried your code, but it didn’t seem to work properly as search returns the index of the first match, and not the number of matches... I updated the code with this:
