mpman MP-FUB26

I just bought a 128Mb USB mp3 player. Here are my first impressions on the MP-FUB26.
mp3 player review | 5 May 2004, by Mortimer

1Basic Information

JPEG - 15.1 kb
  • It’s a simple USB key, with a 3 lines display on the front to display id3 tags.
  • 128Mb storage, quite sufficient for storing music for a walk or a small journey.
  • Simple interface:
  • 1 play/pause/stop/power button,
  • 1 combination slide/push button to control menu and back/forward,
  • 2 volume buttons.
  • support WMA and MP3.
  • voice recorder.
  • Delivered with:
  • 1 set of headphone integrated to a necklace to support the MP-FUB26 player,
  • 1 USB cable (even if you can directly plug the MP-FUB26 in your computer),
  • 1 AAA battery (supposed to last for 8h).

2Bad Points

UPDATE: Make sure to read the user comments at the end of the page. There isn’t a lot of positive input about this player.

Even if it’s just an USB flash drive, it does not work on OS X. Sad, but I was warned, the manual only mentions windows. [1]

I had a lot of problems playing mp3 files at the beginning. I was getting the error file error; information shown on the display said 0 kbps. After some tests, I discovered that the MP-FUB26 only supports id3v1 and won’t play files with id3v2 tags. Before putting any file on the player, convert the tags to id3v1!!

The manual is totally useless. You won’t find any information on the menu content, what are the replay modes, how to record, etc...

No directory support. All your mp3 has to be in the root directory, or at least in the same directory (but the behavior of the MP-FUB26 is strange in this case)

UPDATE Directory can be created on the player. The thing is not to copy the directory from your disk, but to create the directories on the player and then copy the mp3 in them. thanks to NONO for this information.

3Good Points

Design is cool. Even if it’s simple and USB key like, I found it cool.

Button are useful and menus well done even if the manual does not explain their use.

Good sound quality, even with the basic headphones.

A function A-B replay to play sequences in loop.

Karaoke mode displaying lyrics of songs while they are playing.

5Other ressources

Here is an interesting update coming from French forums: The manufacturer of the player has openened an official european site that contains relevant information about the player:

The official forum is a good starting point to find solutions.
